At Last! 20 Top Interior Designed Agree on what's In & Out for 2015

Even if you're a casual observer of interior design trends, you know that getting the professionals to reach a consensus can be as tricky as making a Victorian couch seem at home among contemporary accessories.

This is why conflicting opinions abound in interior design publications, especially at the beginning of a new year. Knowing this, the helpful editors at The Wall Street Journal convened a panel of 20 top designers and – lo and behold – found consensus about five trends that are decidedly “in” and five trends that are definitely “out” for 2015.

This said, you shouldn't feel any pressure to rush out and buy what they say is “in” and pitch what they say is “out.” Fundamentally, interior design is a form of self-expression. So if your peach and green lava lamp conveys “peace” and “home” to you, by all means, light it up at the end of the day. If you are looking for a savvy mortgage broker, Vancouver’s Invis- The Siemens Group sees and hears about enough homes to know: it's the well maintained home – not always the “best decorated” – that usually bests all the others under consideration.
Still, homes for sale offer great ideas for interior design. Whether you decide to mimic them in your home or simply enjoy discussing interior design trends among your friends and family, here's what those designers agree is “in,” whether you're selling a home, looking for one or staying put:

  • Mixed metals, which are as tantalizing as they sound. Warm metals such as rose-gold and copper commingled with cool and shiny ones like silver is a particularly eye-grabbing combination.
  • Painterly rugs, which can be the focal point in any room. Their Monet-like fluidity and irregular pattern breaks can resemble art.
Smoky glass, which has nudged aside the clear look from last year and the year before. Sultry and a bit moody, smoky glass conveys attitude, whatever the surrounding décor.
  • Graphic tiles, once limited to commercial spaces but which have found a new place to call home. Geometric and multicolored titles represent an almost perfect merger between graphic design and interior design.
  • Indigo blue, a dark navy that brings out the best in a wide palette of colors, especially pink, gray, coral and sage. And don't forget white and the lustrous mother of pearl.

While they usher in the new, the newspaper's panel also wishes to say goodbye to a few tired design elements:

  • Chevron prints, more commonly referred to as zigzag. Even when used with restraint, these longstanding prints finally seem to be making designers dizzy.
  • Mirrored furniture, once seen as the epitome of glamor and class. Now the look seems to reflect nothing more than a sense of boredom and distaste.
  • Shaggy Moroccan black and white rugs known as Beni Ourain rugs. Once a go-to item on eBay, these patchwork rugs may have suffered from overexposure.
  • The ombre look, in which shadings on walls and furniture go from light to dark. The designers seemed a bit reluctant to let go of ombre fabrics, however, saying that they continue to be a “decor classic.”
  • Text as décor – and that goes for anything, from wall art to stand-up letters. The designers agreed that this is another trend that is o-u-t-d-a-t-e-d.

Heed the designers' direction or not, your own interior design choices might be influenced by Pantone. The 'color company' has singled out marsala as its color of 2015, a wine-red color that the company maintains is equally at home in any type of décor and is so pleasing to the eye that it might stay “in” even when the calendar turns once again.
